Censorship and Misinformation

Censorship and Misinformation: Finding Balance in Times of Crisis As a woman navigating the digital landscape, I often feel overwhelmed by the flood of information available at our fingertips. Social media platforms serve as lifelines, connecting us to friends, family, and a broader world of ideas. Yet, in these turbulent times—marked by political upheaval, social unrest, and communal tensions—the line between protecting truth and stifling voices feels more blurred than ever. When crises unfold, misinformation can spread like wildfire, causing panic, confusion, and harm. We've seen this in India during communal riots, where false narratives can exacerbate tensions and lead to real-world violence. The emotional weight of such events can be heavy, especially for those of us who care deeply about our communities and the well-being of our loved ones. The Emotional Toll of Misinformation The emotional toll of misinformation is palpable. I vividly recall scrolling through my feed during ...

Child Abuse

India is home to the biggest child population in the world. The country has approximate 440 million children, thus constituting more than 40% of the total population. Child abuse is a basic violation of child rights. Child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuses are shocking due to the scars left behind, the emotional and sexual abuses also leave deep and lasting scars. Child sexual abuse is one of the most neglected social problems faced by our society. Child sexual abuse not only leaves a profound impact on the victimized child but also on society as a whole. All forms of child labour are the worst kind of child abuse negation of the basic child rights. Child labour occurs in various forms such as exploitation, trafficking, sex discrimination, foeticide and infanticide, child labour, sexual offences, etc. In extreme cases a girl child is found raped, children are beaten up by their parents and at times teachers also. Child labour is a serious problem in our...

Global Warming

Image
“Global warming isn’t a prediction, it is happening!” A person denying it or unaware of it is in the most simple terms complicit. Do we have another planet to live on? Unfortunately, we have been bestowed with this one planet only that can sustain life yet over the years we have turned a blind eye to the plight it is in. Global warming is not an abstract concept but a global phenomenon occurring ever so slowly even at this moment. Global Warming is a phenomenon that is occurring every minute resulting in a gradual increase in the Earth’s overall climate. Brought about by greenhouse gases that trap the solar radiation in the atmosphere, global warming can change the entire map of the earth, displacing areas, flooding many countries, and destroying multiple lifeforms. Extreme weather is a direct consequence of global warming but it is not an exhaustive consequence. There are virtually limitless effects of global warming which are all harmful to life on earth. The sea level is incre...

Child Marriage

CHILD MARRIAGE “Culture is no excuse for abuse”  ― Davinder Kaur Child marriage is a global issue fuelled by gender inequality, poverty, social norms and insecurity, and has devastating consequences all over the world. High levels of child marriage reflect discrimination and lack of opportunities for women and girls in society. Despite various statutory provisions in India and initiatives like Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programmes, the progress is not very impressive. Nationwide Covid-19 Lockdown further deteriorated the scenario.   Child Marriage in India Prevalence : United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates suggest that each year, at least 1.5 million girls under 18 get married in India, which makes it home to the largest number of child brides in the world - accounting for a third of the global total. Root Causes of Girl Child Marriage: Child marriages happen within a social and economic context, embedded in a set of beliefs about the statu...

Stress

“Calmness is the cradle of power.” ―Josiah Gilbert Holland  Stress is unavoidable and it is not possible to eliminate it from our lives entirely. Life is full of challenges, and a life without some turmoil is not only impossible but is also undesirable. The hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands of modern life have made stress so commonplace that it has become a way of life for many people. In small doses, stress can help people perform under pressure and motivate them to do their best. But it is not desirable to constantly be in an emergency mode as the mind and body would have to ultimately pay the price. Stress is a normal physical response to events that make us feel threatened or upset our balance in some way. When a threat is perceived, our nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and Cortisol. These hormones rouse the body for emergency action. As a result, our heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure rise...

Depression

“Depression, for me, has been a couple of different things – but the first time I felt it, I felt helpless, hopeless, and things I had never felt before. I lost myself and my will to live.” — Ginger Zee Depression is a medical condition in which a person feels very sad and anxious. It is not only a state of being sad, but also a disease that overcomes the capability to feel good or bad. This condition can be passed down through genes or due to certain depressive events occurring in life. Chemical imbalance occurs in the brain. Compared to men, women are more likely to undergo depression. However, depressed men are more likely to commit suicide compared to women because men are expected to control their emotions due to their social roles. They cannot openly express their depressive feelings in society. Systemic depression is a low level of depression that lasts for couple of years. Another type of depression is bipolar/manic depression. This type of depression has different sympto...

Anxiety

“Anxiety is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.” —Arthur Somers Roche Anxiety is so common that we all have either suffered through or had friends who did at some point. I am one to always say that having an anxious moment sucks because it’s just not fun when those feelings take over – yet even though being overwhelmed by them feels like defeat doesn’t mean anything will come out of this battle for us psychologically speaking as long as enough action has been taken against these distressing thoughts before they get any worse! The most common form of this problem comes in the shape of panic attacks, where humans feel their heart and breathing rate increase for no apparent reason. It can be so maddening that it leaves us feeling discouraged, helpless, or tiring with nothing to look forward to but another attack coming on like waves crashing against our shoreline; only to leave destruction beh...
